Kung Hei Fat Choi

Well maybe not yet, still a couple days to go. But today was the start of the Chinese New Year festivities in Wellington. There will be various shows, festivals and parades taking place over the next 8 days. Today featured a traditional lion dance, some firecrackers, and crafts for kids (decorating giant rats for the Year Of The Rat). There were also some performances, Canto Hip Hop I think...ummm...yeah, I didn't stick around for those.

I'm told that a few years ago the Chinese government gave Wellington a gift and put on an elaborate fireworks show for CNY. Since then though, there hasn't been any fireworks. Maybe one of these years the Wellington Council will get wise and start funding a show each year.

Some of the younger members of the lion dance team.

Just eating some lettuce.

I stuck around for 20 minutes or so after the lion dance to watch the kids decorating the rats. This little girl was cute with her 'little chiney girl' hair buns :)

Here she is taping some streamers on to Mr. Rat. There were five different rats to decorate, each slightly different looking. That's her dad in the background.

Another proud parent, this time a mother with her little girl. No buns this time, just pig tails. Her mom saw me taking a picture of her daughter, so I think she purposely went into the frame to hug her up for the camera...maybe she was hoping to get into the paper?
